A back-up person supports the chief. • Other programmers act in various support or design roles. system developers, university teachers, or application specialists. They are paid for their computer expertise, which is their specialty. But something has happened. In my view, there are simply too many amateurs today in the professional ranks. Said another way, many so-called professionals are locked into a purely quantitative practice of programming. The purpose of this essay is to define "professionals" as those who have a grasp of the quantitative requirements of their duties along with an understanding of the qualitative demands that are necessary to this high calling.

Any ideas about the functional specifications are not relevant. User requirements are not a consideration when writing a program because the programmer is the only user. The requirement is met when the program works, even ifthat program is fairly complicated. Whatever particular (and personal) needs are required or suggested along the way, the amateur programmer can change the behavior of the program to meet them. Features can be added or subtracted at any time; no one else will be affected. If it works out, it's all right.

But when software goes awry, or updates are needed, the authors may have forgotten what was really in the program, or they may have moved on to other projects. It may be absurd to think that one can find a good mechanic for a 1933 Essex, but one should expect that bugs or updates in a 1983 payroll program can be handled by any good software engineer. Actually, one should expect that there will be no bugs at all in the software. The problem of software produced by our "P-sub-A" programmer is that maintenance is not a priority in design.
